What a BEAST of a week I’ve had! Guto here, or should I say the rugged ‘Beast’ as that is my new identity for the upcoming Christmas season at Bluestone Resort. It has been a very happy Friday today as we finally have all our ducks in a row and can begin full, clean runs of the show! There’s no missing props, no costumes needing alterations and all of our sound and lighting cues are where they should be! But let’s put today’s news to one side as I update you on yesterday, a very VERY special day!
Did you guess it? Yesterday was my birthday! Throughout the day I was made to feel really special by all of my fellow actors and cast members. The day started with the cast singing Penblwydd Hapus (Happy Birthday) to me – harmonies were on point I must say! It was very stagey and there were definitely a few jazz hands thrown into the mix! The day even got better with director Mark Jermin treating me to coffee (milk no sugar please) and a jammie dodger – diolch Mark! It was definitely a brilliant day and was made even better by the fact that I got to do what I love most on my birthday which is to perform. Birthday celebrations aside, it’s been a real pleasure to have been working with and performing alongside such an enthusiastic and hard working cast and crew for the last couple of weeks. The show has come a long way from our first rehearsal in Swansea a few weeks back, and with a few runs today and the next following days, we’ll be ready to give our audiences an experience they won’t forget.
Our technical team Gareth and Jason were back in yesterday accompanying Liam (stage manager) and Mark. Together they finished off the technical side of the production and added in a few extra details and special effects to make this production even more magical. This is my first English speaking role, which has been a challenge in itself as English is my second language. With the most of the cast coming from South Wales & London, and myself being the only Welsh speaker in the cast, every day I’ve had the opportunity to teach the cast a new Welsh word. The word for today is Tywysog (Prince). Who knows.. I may be able to teach them the whole script by the new year!
This is my first production where I’ve had to wear a mask, and taking on the persona of an animal/human has been a lot of fun. However, there is a sigh of relief when the prince is revealed as I can take off my heavy furry mask and wipe the sweat off my brow. Another treat came my way towards the end of the day, what better way to listen to Mark’s notes after a run than having a slice of birthday cake together. Counting down the days now until the madness begins and I for one cannot wait.
STOP the performance for my Birthday Feast,
Jammie Dodger and a cupper, I’m one happy Beast!
Not long now until you can see our show,
